A Real Interview

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

This is one of the most riveting interviews I’ve ever watched on TV. It is a true pleasure to watch a real interview in which a public official is actually held accountable for their actions. There were no softball questions here…When are elected officials going to realize that we don’t place them in office to impose their personal opinions/agendas on private citizens? I don’t care how this AG “feels” about the AIG bonuses. In fact, in his position he should have no professional “opinion” at all…he should be opinion neutral and just enforce the law. What a concept…

It’s All About The Customer…

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

It’s all about the customer…Sync the timing of the message with the needs of the market if you want to achieve advertising success. The above ad is simply brilliant…Hyundai gets an A+ for innovative marketing during tough times, and at the same time gains entry into my “Companies That Get It” category. While I enjoy creative advertising, what I truly love is a simple, relevant, authentic message that resonates with its intended market. When the going gets tough, smart companies listen to the needs of their customers. What Hyundai recognizes that other companies fail to grasp, is that putting the needs of their customers ahead of their own, is in fact in their best long-term interest. The sad news is that the big three US automakers have been caught asleep at the wheel again…

A CEO Worthy of Following

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

“A CEO Worthy of Following” is something that many workers long for. If you want to become a truly great CEO, then apply your focus on maximizing shareholder value over maximizing your personal W-2 and see what happens. Oddly enough, the more you focus on making those around you successful, the more successful you will become. As a CEO Coach one of the questions that I often pose to my clients is: Why should anyone be led by you? If as a CEO you don’t have a very good answer to this question (other than because I’m the boss), you might want to watch the above video profiling the CEO of Japan Airlines. All great leaders are willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term gain.

The Innovation Song

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

The Innovation Song you ask? That’s right…The above video contains a song performed by a Stanford student which was submitted for his final project for a class entitled: “Innovation and Implementation in Complex Organizations.” The song was intended as a tribute to Gordon MacKenzie’s “Orbiting the Giant Hairball,” a book which puts forth some thoughts on how organizations can better address the issue of innovation. The video is superb, and nails the issues surrounding a lack of innovation better than many more detailed case studies which I have read over the years.  Many a CEO could benefit from downloading this song on their iPod. If this project didn’t get an “A” it should have…

The Counter-Intuitive CEO

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

Great CEOs are counter-intuitive. They don’t subscribe to herd mentality, rather they use their contrarian instincts to exploit opportunities, to create advantage, to build strong leadership teams, to expand market share, and to increase brand equity. A global recession is nothing more than an excuse for poor leaders to assign blame for weak performance elsewhere. The counter-intuitive CEO (Great CEOs) sees an economic downturn as an opportunity to strengthen their organizations and to grow the enterprise. As 2009 draws to a close I want you to invest 10 minutes in watching the video above as it provides a strong validation for what I’ve been espousing to you for quite sometime in posts like: “Recession Proof Your Business” or “Beware the CFO“ or “Young CEOs.” I wish you great success in 2009…

Keeping Your Composure

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

Great leaders understand the value of keeping their composure. The video above, while certainly entertaining, is also a prime example of what can happen when you lose your composure. As a CEO few things are as important as displaying a command presence and demonstrating the ability to maintain control no matter how dire the circumstances. I would recommend going back and reading a prior post entitled “Never Let Them See You Sweat.”

Dealing with Tough Times

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

Few would disagree that we’re in tough economic times…however it’s not the tough times, but how you choose to deal with them that’s important. There has been no shortage of unsettling news over the last few weeks. With disequilibrium in the capital and credit markets, tough times for the average American aren’t usually too far behind. Some of you reading today’s post have already felt the constraints associated with tough economic times. However rather than pen assuaging platitudes in an attempt to provide comfort, I want to provide you with simple and clear direction; Don’t panic, don’t quit, and most importantly get your head back in the game. I’m going to rely on the video above to communicate what I believe is a sound approach to dealing with the tough blows that life can dole out. If you find the above video inspirational, you might also enjoy a previous post using Michael Jordan as an example of the benefits of enduring and pressing through tough times…

CEO Profile – Bill McDermott

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

Bill McDermott is a CEO who understands leadership. As a CEO Coach I have had the benefit of hearing many a chief executive describe what “leadership” means to them, but rarely have I heard a CEO describe executive leadership as articulately as Bill does in the following interview. Bill’s life story is both an inspiration and a testimony to the benefits of a sound work ethic. As a teenager already holding down three jobs, he took on a fourth job working at a Deli (which he later purchased from the owner while still in his teens), worked his way through college, and got his start in sales at Xerox. Before he left Xeorx he had climbed to the position of Division President and was a corporate officer. After leaving Xerox, he did a stint as the President of Gartner, and served as an EVP with Siebel Systems…all of this before his 42nd Birthday. I invite you to listen to what Bill McDermott has to say about leadership…

How Not To Advertise…

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

While I’ve seen some great TV spots over the years, Microsoft has created the perfect case study in how not to advertise with its latest commercial. If you think a large advertising budget coupled with a celebrity endorsement will move mountains, then I suggest you watch this video by Microsoft. This ad is one of the worst I’ve seen, and is the perfect reason to fire an ad agency…

While much could be said about this ad, the following check list sums-up my evaluation:

  • Cool – no
  • Funny – gong

CEO Profile: Steve Ballmer

By Mike Myatt, Chief Strategy Officer, N2growth

Steve BallmerI was recently asked if I would share my insights on some of today’s high-profile CEOs. I assume that the thought underpinning the inquiry was that since the majority of my working life is spent coaching and mentoring CEOs, or evaluating and assessing CEO performance for boards of directors and investors, that I might be able to provide some insights on their performance. I thought this might be an interesting exercise, so today’s post will be the inaugural piece in a new category entitled CEO Profiles. I’m going to attempt to provide a balanced scorecard approach in reviewing the performance of the lucky CEOs profiled so that there will be actionable takeaways from each assessment. You are invited to send me the names of CEOs that you’d like to see profiled, and if they’re not a current or past client I’ll add them to the queue.  Today’s Profile…Steve Ballmer, CEO Microsoft.
