Thanks for the ideas. I'd like to see companies apply this thinking in a youth mentoring strategy connecting current employees with future employees. Kids coming up the pipeline could learn much from workers already in the workforce while employees acting as mentors to youth can build their own skills and networks. A company strategy that supports this would also engage people in different parts of the company in relationships that support informal workplace mentoring. See http://www.tutormentorexchange.net for ways companies from many industries could support youth mentoring in cities where they do business.

Great point! One that most leaders tend to overlook!

On a parallel note, I read a post by Art Petty called 'Lend a coaching hand to your first-time leaders' (http://artpetty.com/2011/06/14/lend-a-coaching-hand-to-your-first-time-leaders/). It talks about how mentoring doesn't end once your ‘protégé’ is in a position of power. I thought it'd be a relevant read.

As a pastor I am constantly challenged to discern who I should or should not mentor. Everyone who comes for mentoring certainly needs it but many fail to take appropriate action to be mentored. This is always a tough call for the mentor. Eventually I settle for the ones who show the most consistency, the most hunger, and those who are willing to cooperate in the agenda.

Thanks Mike for your continued wisdom, truth, and intelligence regarding the major issues of today's leaders.

There are some good points made here--especially about the mentor also needs to be a mentee or mentored by someone as well. I have always believed this. D. McCorery

All effective organizations produce a culture in which the acquisition, development, implementation, and transfer of abilities and understanding are highly valued. This kind of culture just can't exist where the concept of coaching isn't a top lower initiative. Leaders mustn't only embrace coaching, they have to become its champion.

Hi Oarabile:

I'm glad you found the post to be thought provoking. I'm always pleased with the outcome if I've provoked thought as opposed to anger:). Thanks for stopping by Oarabile.

I have spent the last 10 years of my professional life promoting the need for mentoring in organizations so I appreciate and agree with your thoughts on leadership. I am glad I found your blog via a Tweet. Eager to read more.

Mike,

There's wisdom in your posts of what makes for great leaders. You also possess a facility for exposing the bad ones. I continue to refer others in my organization to your blog in the hope that, they too, can benefit from your mentoring.

Your comment that 'leadership is not about the leader, but rather about those being led' recalled for me something Vice Admiral Stockdale once said about how "all leadership must be based on goodwill".

Conversely, my having to, all too often, interact with scarecrows in leadership positions, brings to mind a keen observation by Voltaire:

"To succeed in the world it is not enough to be stupid; one must also be well-mannered."
