A leading vision insurance provider in the US came to N2Growth with a Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel succession opportunity. After fifteen years of serving in the role, the Chief Legal Officer announced his retirement. With just a half year until their departure, the client and N2Growth launched an engagement to find the insurance provider’s next legal executive to lead the organization’s house legal team.

The Mission

Throughout the last fifteen years of the CLO’s tenure, our client went on an aggressive growth trajectory where they now were composed of six complementary business units. Staying true to their nonprofit mission of providing affordable vision insurance benefits, their business pillars directly connected 90 million patients to network doctors, spanning across the globe. Their new size and extensive footprint brought new strategic and legal challenges a new general counsel would need to confront. 

Our client was not only looking for a legal scholar but also a leader with a solid understanding of expansionary strategy, regulatory compliance, and key legal business savviness. The perfect candidate for this role would need to lead the legal department and corporate counsel, build strong relationships with the business unit heads, understand the challenges and opportunities of our client’s unique business lines, and communicate business strategy comfortably within the executive team and positively impact company culture.

The Result

N2Growth’s executive recruiting team embarked on a search for top talent candidates with a track record of success, and assessed three pools of talent: internal candidates, an open outside application campaign, and a targeted talent acquisition search. Hard skills were only the starting point. The search entailed assessing candidate personalities, legal talents, past law firms, business acumen, leadership qualities, and performance in highly regulated, fast-paced, and entrepreneurial organizations.
